Colorado Health Network (CHN) is a nonprofit providing health and support services to individuals living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS. Through CHN’s 14-unit supportive housing program, Dave’s Place, residents wanted a bright, colorful, positive, and uplifting mural inspired by nature. The central motif is the Black-eyed Susan, a flower native to Colorado, with 14 leaves representing the 14 residents who call Dave’s Place home. The mural also uses exactly 14 colors.
Tenants and CHN employees were invited to participate in painting the mural, making the finished piece a collaborative reflection of the community it was created for. Originally intended for the home’s communal space, the project was reimagined as a mobile mural when the long-term location of the residence became uncertain. Painted across three plywood panels wrapped in canvas, the mural can travel with the residents and be installed wherever their next home may be.
